26/07/05 Regional Issues for Scientific Business
CaSE was today delighted to engage with the business community to discuss regional policies relevant to scientific industries. At a CaSE Opinion Forum in Yorkshire, a wide range of participants discussed issues as diverse as raising matching funds for grants from the Development Agencies, perceptions of the value of academic knowledge, and how regional strategies fit with national policies. George Baxter, Head of Science at the NorthWest Development Agency, and Trevor Gregory from Yorkshire Science represented the Regional Development Agencies, with business participants from large and small companies in the fields of biotechnolology, chemicals and engineering, coming from various parts of the country. "This was an excellent opportunity for CaSE to make sure that it's policies in this area are up to date and well-informed," said Professor Richard Joyner, Chairman of CaSE, "so that when we meet with ministers, we are working hard to represent the whole scientific community".

20/07/05 10-year framework for science
CaSE today welcomed the publication of a review of the Chancellor's 10-year framework for science, and especially the apparent confirmation that the Government intends to continue to invest in the science base at the levels anounced last year. "There have been worrying rumours from 'senior Treasury sources' and ambiguous answers to Parliamentary questions, suggesting that the Government may have been planning to cut back on its plans for science," said Dr Peter Cotgreave, Director of CaSE, but it appears from today's announcement that Gordon Brown has decided after all to support science at the levels he originally planned".

05/07/05 Engineering in Welsh colleges
CaSE today sought to develop further its understanding of the Further Education Sector by taking part in a meeting with the National Forum of Engineering Centres in Wales. Speaking at Yale College in Wrexham, CaSE Director Peter Cotgreave said that CaSE's work on further education in England had been influenced by an important Opinion Forum meeting, at which lecturers and others involved in further education had highlighted problems of funding, league tables an coursework assessment. Now CaSE wanted to make sure it properly understood the issues in other parts of the UK.
