27/11/08 Science for Scotland
CaSE welcomed the Scottish Government's vision for science, but warned that it
needs to be followed up with funding in order to make it a reality. Commenting
CaSE's director, Nick Dusic, said "The Scottish Government has set out
a strong case for why science is central to the future prosperity of the nation.
Unfortunately it did not make hard commitments to properly fund the research
base and science education. Unless the Scottish Government makes the commitment
to have a sustained increased investment in the research base it cannot expect
to attract the scientists and engineers needed for world leading universities,
research institutes and companies."

Commenting on the report, Nick Dusic said "The report highlighted the problem
of the skills maze which individuals and employers have to navigate. However,
its recommendation to abolish central funding for undergraduate and taught post-graduate
education is unworkable for science and engineering subjects as they are both
resource intensive and strategically important."
