CaSE response to September 2025 cabinet reshuffle

05 Sep 2025

CaSE’s response to the cabinet reshuffle on Friday 5th September 2025. The reshuffle saw Peter Kyle move from his position as Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology to the Department for Business and Trade, Liz Kendall move from her role as Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions to take over from Peter Kyle at DSIT, and Pat McFadden appointed to head a new department combining work and pensions and the skills brief formerly part of the Department for Education.

“I am pleased to welcome Liz Kendall as the new Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology. It is critical to have research and innovation represented at the cabinet table and I look forward to working with her to provide the best support and direction for UK R&D.

“Peter Kyle has been a great champion for UK R&D and technology during his time as Secretary of State for DSIT. We wish him luck in his new post at the Department for Business and Trade, where we hope to continue working with him on the important issues facing what is a vital part of the UK’s R&D sector.

“It is also noteworthy that the skills brief is to be split out from education and moved to a new department under Pat McFadden as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. It is important we get clarity on how the remit of this new department sits alongside those with existing interests relating to skills.”
