Public Attitudes to R&D: Terminology

This briefing covers responses to terminologies tested in CaSE’s Discovery Decade 2022-23 public attitudes study, which comprised five nationally-representative surveys polling a total of 20,000 people, and 14 focus groups. It identifies four key points:

  • Terminology clutter risks confusing our audiences
  • ‘Research and Development’ is a familiar phrase
  • R&D gains support in the context of investment, jobs and education
  • ‘Innovation’ and ‘Research and Innovation’ also perform well
