CaSE awarded £2.7million to build on landmark public opinion work

14 Nov 2024

The Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE) has been awarded a grant of £2.7million over five years by Wellcome, to extend and evolve our work exploring public opinion towards R&D.

The grant will support an ambitious 5-year programme to produce high-quality data and practical tools for all R&D organisations to use. It will also allow CaSE to evolve our own advocacy activities and integrate public opinion insights into the heart of our work.

This programme of work will capitalise on the highly successful Discovery Decade programme, which has demonstrated the value of public opinion insights in R&D advocacy, including through CaSE’s work around the 2024 General Election.

This grant signals an exciting new chapter for CaSE and its role supporting the sector – one which builds on CaSE’s four-decades of experience, and which fully integrates a public dimension to our advocacy work.

Commenting on the award of the grant:

Our sector has a responsibility to make R&D matter to more people across society. By engaging and understanding the public we can make our messages about the importance of R&D more compelling, and ensure political audiences are aware of public interests.

Being awarded this grant is a very exciting milestone for CaSE and reflects the hugely positive impact our public opinion work has had to date. I would like to thank Wellcome for their continued support, and for making this work possible.

Dr Alicia Greated
Executive Director, CaSE

The public must feel connected to research and policymakers must be well informed to make the long-term decisions that will help to achieve a healthier future for everyone. After the success of their Wellcome funded Discovery Decade programme, we are delighted to continue supporting CaSE and their work to put public opinion at the heart of R&D.

Martin Smith
Head of Policy Lab at Wellcome

To make R&D matter to more people and position it as a national mission, we must reimagine the relationship between R&D, the public, and politicians.

This funding allows CaSE to expand our efforts to help R&D organisations forge a new partnership with the public. If we succeed, the public will have a greater sense of agency and connection with a sector that feels more human and local. And politicians will see R&D as an issue with sustained public interest and a democratic mandate for difficult, long-term decisions.
