Tracking attitudes to R&D over time

Expanding CaSE's public opinion research to monitor, explore and respond to trends in attitudes

CaSE is building on its extensive public opinion research to create a robust data series that tracks attitudes to R&D over time. The tracker studies will combine large, nationally representative polling with qualitative research to understand how the public think and feel about R&D.

CaSE’s tracker studies aim to support R&D advocacy and engagement by providing new insights into public attitudes, and refreshing CaSE’s evidence-led advocacy tools that translate these insights into practical actions.

We have used CaSE’s Public Attitudes to R&D 2022-23 study as a starting point, alongside in-depth engagement with stakeholders across the R&D system. By consistently collecting data on important themes over time, the R&D sector can then monitor, explore and respond to changes and trends in public attitudes.

CaSE has commissioned a consortium of research organisations to conduct our public opinion research from 2024-29, with the research agency Icaro leading the tracker study, and fieldwork being carried out by Deltapoll.

The first wave of the tracker study was published in November 2025, with quantitative fieldwork conducted in July 2025 and qualitative research in September and October 2025. You can read the results on the Public Opinion research pages.

This study – Public Attitudes to R&D 2025 – will inform CaSE’s future work, identifying areas that require further exploration and opportunities to collaboratively turn insights into action. Throughout, we will continue to advocate for the changes needed to build a strong R&D system that benefits the lives and livelihoods of people across society.

The next tracker wave will be in 2028, and you can follow updates from this page.
