Letters to the Labour Government

We congratulated Sir Keir on becoming prime minister and welcomed his Government’s recognition of the importance of UK R&D. We also expressed our support for the appointments he has made in key ministerial roles, and how stability and expertise are vital for R&D to drive economic growth.

We took the opportunity to highlight some of our public attitudes to R&D findings, and shared our latest briefing, The First 100 Days: A Plan for R&D, which sets out the vision CaSE and our members have for R&D in the UK.

We congratulated Peter Kyle on his appointment as Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology and welcomed his recognition of the importance of taking a long-term view on investment in research and innovation capability and the vital contribution of R&D to economic growth.

We congratulated Sir Patrick on his appointment as Minister of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology and conveyed our hope for a continuation of the productive relationship we had with him during his time as Government Chief Scientific Adviser.

We expressed our willingness to work with him to ensure predictable, sustainable, and long-term R&D funding. also taking the opportunity to highlight the depth and breadth of our membership, and the insights they will be able to provide.

We congratulated Yvette Cooper on her appointment as Home Secretary and conveyed how attracting global talent is essential to support a thriving, collaborative UK R&D sector that in turn drives economic growth.

We expressed the sector’s and the public’s support for the best global science and innovation talent to come and work in the UK. We drew the Home Secretary’s attention to our recent immigration briefing in which, working with our members and the wider sector, we have set out recommendations for a visa and immigration system that supports a thriving science and engineering sector.
